Fortaleza

History

Fortaleza is situated approximately 30 kilometres south of Cumbuco and it is the capital of the province Ceara. The history of Fortaleza starts about 375 years ago, when the Dutch colonised the area and built Fort Schoonenborgh in 1649. Later, when the Portuguese defeated the Dutch, the fort was given the name: ‘Fortaleza Nossa Senhora da Assuncao’ . What started as a small village built around a fort became the modern fifth largest city in Brazil with over 2.5 million inhabitants. In the old centre you will find various imposing buildings like the theatre, the old prison and the provincial council. It is certainly worth a visit.

Going Out

Dragao do Mar is the cultural centre of Fortaleza, with its countless little bars, restaurants and discos I which local bands regularly hold live performances. The best known of these is Club Mucuripe: an entertainment complex with several discos which offer various musical styles. Apart from a cultural centre a visit to the Pirates bar is a must. It is a phenomenon in Brazil; forro shows and live music in one of the largest discos of South America. It is only open on Mondays and the ‘Banda o Pirata’ starts playing at 11.00 p.m.

Boulevard

Along the impressive boulevard ‘Beira Mar’ you can find dozens of terraces, bars and restaurants. The Brazilians jog, walk, stroll every night along this kilometres long strip. There is also a daily souvenir market. The Beira Mar may even be more lively and exciting than the Copa Cobana in Rio de Janeiro.
